be an easy day for us. >> she was all smiles. a lot of people smiling. san jose and oakland international, also with no major problems. now to a story you'll see only on nbc bay area. he is remorseful. that's according to the lawyer of jonathan wilbanks, a man accused of a violent crime spree last week that included a carjacking, a murder and a gunfight with police. damian trujillo is at the hall of justice in san jose where wilbanks was arraigned today. dame ran? >> reporter: jonathan wilbanks was in court for less than a minute. he didn't say a word. the 25-year-old now faces the death penalty. wearing the red garb given to violent inmates, jonathan wilbanks didn't raise his head during his first court appearance. his lawyer didn't say much outside the courtroom either, but what he did say said a lot. >> the mind of the suspect? >> i would say extremely remorseful. >> what does that mean? >> remorseful for what, sir? >> reporter: wilbanks is charged

with killing a carjacking victim on friday, then going on a crime spree that ended in the shoot-out with san jose police. in an exclusive interview, wilbanks' younger brother says his family is stunned, and hopes the best for the murder victims' families. >> we all need to unite and donate to the families lost. i don't know why this stuff happens, but that's the only way to make the situation better right now. >> reporter: the prosecutor says the officer whose car was riddled with bullets reacted heroically at the barrage of gunfire. >> he got out and chased on foot, realized his gun wouldn't function because it had actually been struck by a round. he didn't stop. he went back to his car, got a shotgun, continued the pursuit on foot. >> reporter: jonathan wilbanks graduated from jacobs lick high school. this was his brother's reaction when i asked if wilbanks was capable of such a violent crime. there is a $20,000 reward for the capture of the second

suspect in the crime spree. and we can't forget that second officer who came to the rescue. police say he may have saved that first officer's life. and i just got a facebook message from another san jose patrolman. he tells me his comrades are probably going to pick up collection also for the murder victim's family. live at the hall of justice in san jose, i'm damian trujillo, nbc bay area news. >> thank you. also in san jose, police are still looking for a driver of a dark sedan who hit and killed a man this morning. it happened in east san jose. investigators believe the victim was jaywalking as he tried to cross alum rock avenue. this happened about 6:00 this morning. the first car sped off and continued west on alum rock. this is the third time within a year that someone has been hit and killed in this intersection, which is why the east side neighborhood center has been pushing for safety changes.

they want cars to simply slow down. and they also want to warn people about the dangers of jaywalking. >> and the volume of the cars and the traffic, it's really crashing together in this community right now. it has been for the longest time. but now the clash is really so much, much more intense. >> the center suggests the city create a senior zone along alum rock with more speed limit signs and more visible crosswalk lines. an oakland man has been found dead after he apparently slipped and fell while searching for his pet. police say 59-year-old andrew mallian appears to have drowned in the old rock quarry which backs up to his condo. his roommate called 911 after he had been for over an hour searching for his missing cat. they found his body just before 1:00 this morning. they also spotted the cat wandering a hillside. neighbors say he was devoted to his pets and was regularly seen

walking with them. a ceasefire makes this night -- makes this a night of relative calm, ending eight days of fighting between israel and palestinian militants in gaza. just hours after a bomb exploded on an israeli bus in tel aviv, injuring dozens of people, secretary of state hillary clinton announced a ceasefire agreement between the palestinian militant group hamas and israel. israel will also consider easing border movement for palestinians. experts point out this is a ceasefire, not a peace deal. >> it is a creative way to at least stop the firing, but it doesn't necessarily solve the larger issue. >> people of this region deserve the chance to live free from fear and violence. and today's agreement is a step in the right direction that we should build on. >> prime minister benjamin netanyahu says if the truce does not hold, israel would consider

an east bay man accused of

burglarizing the palo alto home of the late steve jobs appeared in court today. 35-year-old kariem mcfarlin of alameda pleaded no contest to a burglary spree that spanned four counties and included the home of the late apple co-founder. he wrote a letter to mrs. jobs telling her he was sorry. >> a letter to mrs. job for taking her things. and he made a statement that if he had known it was mr. jobs' home or her home, that he would have avoided that. at the time he didn't realize that after he took the property, of course, he ended up with steve's wallet and driver's license. >> mcfarlin has no other criminal record. investigators say he was homeless and living in his car at the time of the burglaries. if convicted he could face up to eight years in prison. the apple spaceship will take a little longer to land. the company says its futuristic looking headquarters will not be finished until 2016. that's later than expected. apple and the city of cupertino

says there will probably be some delays in the upcoming environmental impact report, the eir, which means the 176-acre campus won't break ground until 2014. the plan was to break ground next year. about 12,000 apple employees will work in what is being called the apple campus 2. cupertino official says they plan to post an updated set of plans on the city's website shortly after thanksgiving. it's business as usual at the port of oakland after a one-day strike. many trucks were ready to be loaded or unloaded this morning after drivers slept in their big rigs. the strike was over stalled contract talks between management and the port's custodial and maintenance workers. they've been without a contract for 17 months now. union leaders and port officials will hold a fact-finding meeting with a mediator next week. on this thanksgiving break, wild turkeys. that's the topic. there are plenty of them in some bay area neighborhoods. and people say they're delicious. but is it legal to hunt them?

the simple answer is yes. a california fish and game wander says we're in the middle of the fall turkey hunting season which runs through december 9th. >> wild turkey hunting is fairly common in the bay area there is not a lot of huntable land in the bay area so most of your turkey hunting is done on private lands out here. >> the wander says you must be on private property or on land where it is legal to hunt. that means no county parks or golf courses. you must have a valid hunting license, and you cannot discharge a deadly weapon like a shotgun or a bow and arrow within 150 yards of place where any people live. thousands of people in the bay area have a little more to be thankful for this thanksgiving because the spirit of thanksgiving appears to be alive and well. >> nbc aye's marianne favro joins us in st. james park. these are heartwarming example. i know you have plenty of them. >> reporter: yes. and many people are very creative about the way they're

giving this season. well, tomorrow morning at 10:30, hundreds of people will come here to st. james park in downtown san jose to a get a free hearty turkey sandwich and some pumpkin pie. the giveaway started last year, but now the man behind the effort says he is going to double the number of sandwiches that he gives out this year. bread, check. turkey, check. today these volunteers assembled 300 sandwiches for the homeless. the idea is to deliver the sack lunches directly to those in need at st. james park in san jose. bob mann with california superstores started the tradition last year. >> i just want to give. it's something that we need to do and share. it's part of bringing people together and letting them realize what the whole family thing is about. >> reporter: across town at sacred heart community service, hundreds of people lined up to receive last-minute bags of food. this year more than 4200 people

received boxes of food and a turkey, including tanya herera, a single mother of four who is pregnant. >> it helps me a lot because it's hard to find work and child care and everything. and places to live because of the situation of the economy. so but now this is like helped out a real lot. >> reporter: and the number of people needing help is growing daily. >> yesterday we signed up 74 new families who have never before needed help. they've come to sacred heart yesterday. on monday we signed up 81 new families. >> reporter: here at ristorante don giovanni in mountain view, people will pull up chair to enjoy free fine dining tomorrow, which is why today chefs are busy cooking up 125 turkeys, and volunteers are peeling potatoes. restaurant owner john acaya has been opening his doors and offering the feast for 23 years. >> we make sure nobody goes hungry, and we make sure everybody is welcome in here.

it doesn't matter who they are, no question asked. >> reporter: the kurdish immigrant says he has so much to be thankful for. he is happy so many people who would otherwise be alone this thanksgiving consider his restaurant home. the feast at don giovanni's restaurant in mountain view will begin tomorrow morning at 10:30 and run until 4:00 in the afternoon. and once again, turkey sandwiches will be handed out here at st. james park in downtown san jose, beginning at 10:30 tomorrow morning. reporting live in san jose, marianne favro, nbc bay area news. >> thank you, marianne. people are counting down in central park right now to a time-honored tradition, the annual macy's thanksgiving parade. and that's in new york city. preparations are still in the final stages. balloons are being filled and raised to the sky, and thousands will be marching. and millions around the country will be watching tomorrow. but this year a very special tribute will be paid to those affected by hurricane sandy. each person in the parade will be wearing a pin from the

american red cross. and a special float will be dedicated to the first responders and volunteers. let's bring in our chief meteorologist jeff ranieri, who used to work at 30 rock at the network level. how is that parade, jeff? >> it's incredible. if you live in new york city, you have to go see it in person at least once. all right. let's get a look at the doppler radar here. over the past 24 hours, we have had a lot of rainfall. also plenty of snow up across the sierra. but it is now cleared out there. are no raindrops on the roadways. if you're doing any traveling tonight, it's a lot safer for you. but let's get a look at these impressive rainfall totals. the north bay got in over an inch. walnut creek 1.12. santa rosa over an inch as well, san francisco at 1 inch even. you head down to san jose. unfortunately only 0.15 as it finally got to the south bay, a lot of that moisture got wrung out. so not quite as much as a soaker. but you can use every job you get there down into san jose. we're dry across lake tahoe. roads will be icy likely here as

we continue throughout the night. if you're headed up to go skiing this thanksgiving weekend, there is a lot of snow up there for those resorts to work with. heavenly one of the first to open. working with at least 24 inches in terms of that snow base. and they improved on that a little bit, even for last night. let's get you into the temperatures, feeling like thanksgiving eve out here up into the north bay, mid and upper 50s right now in santa rosa. also into napa. we'll take you out to our live hd sky network. we're on a race with the sunset. it just gets better and better, each and every second. this is from san jose. and we'll take you into san francisco. and this is spectacular. look at that sun setting as the city lights are shining oh so bright tonight. fairly clear skies here as we continue throughout the night. but we will have to watch out for some fog. we'll have the fog forecast coming up. there goes the storm system just in time for thanksgiving. we're going to see things clear out here. here comes high pressure. it's going to build in from the south. fairly strong for this time of the year. but definitely not expecting any kind of hot weather.

we'll stay on the cool side. this will mean 50s and 60s at the coastline, and not expecting any kind of major extremes. inland we're going to go with 60s inland as we head throughout the next 48 hours. looking great here for thanksgiving, and staying crisp and clear as we head throughout friday's forecast. we'll start with low clouds up into the north bay, east bay and south bay. it's going to clear out. as we head through 10:00 and 11:00 in the morning, a lot of that starts to push out. we are looking at mainly sunny skies here throughout thanksgiving afternoon, from about 1:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. it's looking spectacular. temperatures will start in the upper 40s and low 50s. then as we head throughout the afternoon, we'll get close to 70 future a lot of the interior valleys. but does it look like we'll have widespread 70s here on thursday? some of the warmer spots will be right here down in the interior valleys. if you're headed to see family in los gatos, looking pretty good at 68. back into livermore close to 70. and 66 in san rafael. let's get the three-day forecast in here. it looks like it's going to stay dry here for friday, and also for small business saturday.
